Weapon Background[edit]

The M99 is a semi-automatic anti-materiel rifle that has been produced by Zijiang since 2005. It has since seen use by the People's Liberation Army Navy and Marine Corps in their anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, and has also been seen in the hands of various rebel groups involved in the Syrian Civil War.

Character Design

According to Saru's statement in the official fan book THE ART OF GIRLS'FRONTLINE UNTIL THE STARS, M99 was made a loli because he believed that busty characters overall outnumbered flat-chested characters in Girls' Frontline. Her red skirt with star patterns is a reference to the flag of the People's Republic of China. The triple-bar badge on her left shoulder is a reference to badges worn by battalion leaders in the Young Pioneers of China, a youth group for elementary schoolers. After finishing her initial design, Saru thought she looked like a rabbit, so he then added several rabbit puppet robots.

Since 2017 was the year of Rooster in the Chinese zodiac, her Lunar New Year costume Cyclamen has some elements of chickens in its design, such as chicken earmuffs, a chicken charm on her gun's barrel, and a broken egg in the damaged art.

The phone number seen in the damaged art of her Rabbit Squad costume is 110, which is the emergency phone number for police in China. This references the common joke of calling the police on those who like loli characters.

Character Background

According to the official introduction on the release, M99 is good at learning new things. As a role model of good manner, she's also very aggressive. But sometimes she's stubborn due to her less social experience, plus she is extremely cautious about her pride and appearance, which would often lead her to funny and annoying situations.

Trivia

  • Not to be confused with the Barrett M99, which bears no relation to the Zijiang rifle besides name.
  • M99 is nicknamed "Rabbit Sniper" among CN players.
  • Her "White Rabbit's Summer Banquet" poster is hanging on a wall, half visible, in episode 6 of the 2022 anime adaptation.
