Mechanically, it has been derived from the Armalite AR-18, which had been manufactured under licence in the UK by Sterling Armaments Company. Elements of its design, in particular the bullpup configuration, were inspired by the earlier EM-2 rifle. The first prototypes were tried in 1976, and production ended in 1994. L85A1, Armed Forces' designation for the SA80, a selective fire, bullpup configured, gas-operated, rotating bolt assault rifle made by the British. The initial design stages of this new service rifle project can be traced back to even before the fall of the Third Reich, after many decades of development, countless prototype models made, numerous field tests performed and several different chambering calibre munitions types proposed with three different groups of designing personal groups changed, the rifle design was finally finished during the 1980s. L85A1 immediately replaced the Belgian L1A1 (FN Fal variant) and set as the new standard service rifle for the British Armed Forces such as the Royal Marine, Royal Army Infantry and RAF Regiments, L85A1 also enlisted to service by a couple of Commonwealth member states.
 
As the NATO member nations agreed on 1976 to the standardisation of all NATO military forces munitions to the American 5.56x45mm M193 Cartridge, the SA80 project made the final change to the chambering calibration. L85A1 is capable of firing the 5.56mm munition up to rate of 775 rounds per minute, at the nozzle velocity of 940m/s, and covering an effective firing range of 600 metres. The rifle feeds on a 30 round magazine, A1 model's standard magazine is the Magpul made polymer EMAG but the magazine well can accept the NATO STANAG magazine. L85A1 did not include picatinny rails, meaning it could not mount any NATO tactical accessories. Despite having iron sights built in, all combatants are required to use the SUSAT (Sight Unit Small Arms, Trilux) optical sight for sorties. At the end of the barrel features a slotted flash suppressor, which also serves as a mounting point for the Army issued bayonet. While unable to mount under-rail grenade launchers, rifle grenades are however issued to the L85A1 and can be fired with blank munitions.

After entering service, L85A1 immediately saw action in many modern conflicts such as Northern Ireland, Bosnia and the First Gulf War. User feedbacks for the A1 model however are frequently featured with vocabularies such as "Appalling" "Disastrous", the British media often blames the casualties of Royal Army soldiers on the poor performance of the L85A1. UK MoD (Ministry of Defence) states that they found over 50 (Fifty, see Trivial) faults with the A1 model of L85 during the equipment assessments, which urged the modifications/refurbishment of the gun. In 2000 the (At that time) British owned H&K reviewed the gun and produced the A2 variant, which fixed (Almost) all the major issue with the A1 model and now British Armed Forces are considering replacing the A1 with the more advanced, more reliable, more modular A2 model.<ref name="wikipedia"></ref>.
*L85A1 has a lot of design flaws that caused frequent malfunctions during operations. Such as double feeding in chamber, fragile plastic parts, loose magazine lock and so on. Though Heckler & Koch modified the rifle into the improved A2 model that made it more reliable than the A1 model, there is some reliability problem in some operation environments like the dry desert in this model.
