Career[edit]
The UE-M line of ground control Dolls was custom-designed for the "Jiutian Plan" space exploration program, with development being headed by Svarog Heavy Industries. As one of the rare few space exploration Dolls of its type, the UE-M featured a core with a unique framework, as well as high-performance data collection and processing modules. Its main functions were the monitoring of spacecraft telemetry, observing near-Earth space environments and the activity of other celestial bodies, processing satellite data feeds and so on. Its performance was on par with 42Lab's finest research Dolls, but its bodily motive abilities were sacrificed as a result, since it would be spending most of its time inside a surface base.
The UE-M named "Yuwang" was an early production model of its line that took on a heavy workload during the formative stages of the project. In 2058, as part of the cooperation agreement signed between Svarog Heavy Industries and 42Lab, both Yuwang and the UE-921T unit known as "Xinghuan" were sent to take part in Project Neural Cloud.
Doll Profile 1[edit]
As one of the custom-ordered Dolls for the "Jiutian Plan", the UE-M project might not have received the highest priority and funding, but Svarog HI still put large amounts of their proprietary tech into its design. Among those, the most important module was the specially designed "Trinity" core, whose unique architecture allowed it to compute and process massive amounts of data and swiftly comprehend macro-scale conditions. This level of processing power put it on par with Svarog HI's own core engineer Dolls.
After considering its projected usage and cost-effectiveness analysis, the UE-M's body was designed to only have slightly more output than Universal Anything's economy domestic models. Still, from a strictly utilitarian point of view, the UE-M possessed incredible strength, with the ability to smash concrete columns when operating at full output. That said, this function was only intended to facilitate in transportation of scientific equipment and data. In addition, due to several flaws from early in the development process which were difficult to remedy, the UE-M prototype had inferior mobility compared to its successors.
An interesting point of note is that the UE-M ended up looking nothing like a Svarog-developed Doll. After much debugging, the designers decided to give it an appearance that matched the most common depiction of a researcher. Compared to the other more fashionable Dolls, the UE-M's default appearance was low-key and elegant, a subtly amusing contrast to the power hidden within its frame.
Doll Profile 2[edit]
After the Doll design was completed, the project supervisor named the UE-M prototype "Yuwang" before bringing it back to a aerospace research base in order to demonstrate its professional skills in handling space-related tasks at a terrestrial mission command center.
Due to the decline of the aerospace industry, the labor pool for that line of work had also shrunk, leading to research facilities all over facing manpower crises. Yuwang had his work cut out for him; not only did he have to handle various data computation and processing tasks, he also had to take part in various experiments and take on many duties without staffers and support Dolls aiding him. In 2057, Svarog HI launched a small research rocket to probe a region covered in Collapse Particle clouds. Yuwang handled telemetry monitoring, logging and feedback throughout the entire duration of the mission. Although the rocket was destroyed in the end, Svarog HI managed to gather much valuable data due to Yuwang's professional skills, which also served as an endorsement of the UE-M series' worth.
Svarog HI conducted several dozen more such missions. Although they involved small, experimental rockets, over 90% of them achieved respectable results thanks to Yuwang's help. The sole failure came when an accident occurred with the launch vehicle right after the first-stage boosters were jettisoned and the falling debris damaged the surrounding area. A small fragment damaged Yuwang's body during this incident.
Doll Profile 3[edit]
The accident during the spacecraft launch caused severe damage to Yuwang's leg. Since he was an earlier model, the technology of the maintenance suite that accompanied him had not fully matured yet, and subsequent models had gone through structural revisions, making bodily maintenance for Yuwang exceptionally difficult. On top of that, the heavy workload at the research base where he had been assigned caused his maintenance sessions to be continuously pushed back. Eventually, at Yuwang's request, the base requisitioned a multifunctional personal mobility device for him. From then on, Yuwang began using external devices for long-distance tasks which required physical movement.
That said, it did not seem to cause much inconvenience for him. On one hand, Yuwang had not needed to move much in the first place, so damage to one leg did not hinder his daily activities. On the contrary, the PMD ended up helping him better respond to new tasks which came up. On the whole, his work effectiveness actually went up after the accident.
In the days which followed, the base personnel often saw Yuwang going back and forth on his PMD. Upon seeing this, the supervisor who had brought Yuwang to the base in the first place raised a question: "When I was listing my specifications for a Doll, I know that one of my requirements was a mature, centered personality who could handle stress well, but don't you think he's taking his situation a little TOO calmly?"
Doll Profile 4[edit]
To the rest of the world, Yuwang constantly immersed himself in his work, pouring his interests and passion into the aerospace industry which seemingly had no future. This determined and humble approach earned him much goodwill from the senior researchers at the base. They did not view him as a labor-saving device, but as a junior partner whom they hoped would make something great about himself. Under the influence of these older mentor figures, Yuwang's lifestyle gradually began shifting to match theirs.
While Dolls do not need to eat like human beings do to sustain themselves, Yuwang fully integrated the local dining culture into his way of life. He had three hot meals a day, along with tea or soya milk, and cans of what looked like energy drinks but which actually contained various herbal teas. He also become very familiar with various traditional festivals and even mastered the skill of rapidly making jiaozi on New Year's Eve... That said, he always seemed a little shy when asked to demonstrate that particular technique.
Apart from that, Yuwang also developed a fairly old-fashioned sense of aesthetics. His face—either constantly shrouded under his hat or hidden behind his glasses—seemed entirely divorced from all matters of style. He preferred reading and collecting old poem anthologies, often containing works pertaining to the vast cosmos. On most other occasions, he would only engage in conversation whenever technical topics came up, which led to him thinking of himself as clumsy or even outdated. According to others, however, Yuwang simply had no idea of how moving and powerful the verses he had learned could be.
Doll Profile 5[edit]
Before joining Project Neural Cloud, Yuwang already had a certain degree of understanding regarding the "Jiutian sector" that was being built on Magrasea and the data contained within. After being sent to Jiutian sector, Yuwang used this familiarity to quickly acclimate himself to his surroundings, as well as taking advantage of the environmental characteristics there to turn it into a temporary base on Magrasea where he could continue his studies and observations of the universe. Since there was no space junk or Collapse Particles to interfere with his endeavors, his research went smoothly, and he believed that the data he collected would help with his future career once he returned to reality.
After transferring to the Oasis and reawakening there, Yuwang took a while to completely adjust to his new environment, compared to Xinghuan, who caused a lot of problems at first before swiftly adapting to her surroundings. During his time in the spaceport and at Jiutian sector, the only "weirdo" he had encountered was Xinghuan, but after coming to the Oasis he came to realize that there were countless more people there who were livelier and more rambunctious than she was.
Yuwang seems somewhat at a loss for how to deal with the dynamic environment of the Oasis; it even seems to stifle him a little. However, he's managed to get along with the Professor, Xinghuan and the Engineering Department, at least. Time will do the rest, just as how the stars and universe will change with the passage of time.
