Design specification stated the need of a lighter 7.62mm cartridge firing squad support weapon to replace the outdated M1918 BAR and M1919 Browning MG. Several prototypes were produced, designed with reference to the German FG 42, the final model was named T161E3, after development the said prototype competed against the FN MAG in the procurement process and won. Official US Designation for the T161E3 would be M60, The M60 accompanied the US military from 1957, seeing heavy service in Vietnam with lesser usage into the present day.
