The HK CAWS began development as HK's entry into the Repeating Hand-held Improved Non-rifled Ordnance (RHINO) program, which was a US Army weapons program that grew out of the earlier Special Operations Weapon (SOW) project. RHINO's requirements specified that the submitted weapon needed a magazine capacity of 10 rounds, that felt recoil was to be no greater than a Remington 870P firing M162 or M257 buckshot cartridges, and that the system provide penetration and incapacitation capabilities significantly better than M162 and M257 buckshot. In response to these specifications, Olin and Winchester developed a 3 in (76 mm) belted brass cartridge, containing 8 3.1 g (0.11 oz) tungsten alloy pellets fired at 538 m/s (1,770 ft/s). Ballistic testing showed these pellets capable of penetrating 20 mm (0.79 in) of pine board or a 1.5 mm (0.059 in) mild steel plate barrier at 150 m. These cases were also capable of being loaded with 000 Buckshot or with flechette darts provided by Olin. These flechette rounds fired twenty much smaller projectiles at a high velocity of approximately 2,950 ft/s (900 m/s).

The development of the HK CAWS started in response to the JSSAP requirement for Repeating Hand-held Improved Non-rifled Ordnance (RHINO), which itself grew out of the Special Operations Weapon (SOW) project. RHINO specified a magazine capacity of 10 rounds, a requirement for the new ammunition to be incompatible with commercial 12ga shotguns, that felt recoil to be no greater than a Remington 870P firing M162 or M257 buckshot cartridges and that the system provide penetration and incapacitation capability significantly better than M162 and M257. In response Olin and Winchester developed a 3 in (76 mm) belted brass cartridge, containing 8 3.1 g (0.11 oz) tungsten alloy pellets fired at 538 m/s (1,770 ft/s) and capable of penetrating 20 mm (0.79 in) pine or 1.5 mm (0.059 in) mild steel plate barrier at 150 m. These cases were also capable of being loaded with 000 Buckshot or with flechettes. Olin, in support of HK's CAW, also offered a fléchette load, using twenty much smaller projectiles at a high velocity of approximately 2,950 ft/s (900 m/s)

In the early 1980s, the RHINO program was replaced by the Close Assault Weapon System, or CAWS, program. The stated main goal of this new program was to develop a new generation firearm capable of firing multiple projectiles at a high impulse, with a desired effective range of 100–150 meters. Using multiple projectiles, it was theorized, should increase the chances of hitting the target in combat. One of the teams that entered a design into the CAWS race was Heckler & Koch Germany, coupled with Winchester Corp. United States, who entered the design they had been working on since the RHINO program.

By the early 1980s the CAWS program had taken over from RHINO. The main goal of this program was to develop a new generation personal firearm, capable of firing high-impulse, multiple projectiles with effective range of 100–150 meters. Using multiple projectiles should increase the chances of hitting the target in combat. One of the teams entered in the CAWS race was Heckler & Koch Germany, coupled with Winchester Corp. United States. Heckler & Koch was responsible for developing a weapon, while Winchester was responsible for the development of new types of ammunition.

The HK CAWS featured a bullpup design that made heavy use of high-impact polymer, which gave the CAWS an appearance similar to another experimental weapon from HK, the G11. The CAWS featured an interior 'floating recoil system' meant to reduce the weapon's recoil. The gun was designed to be ambidextrous, with fire selectors and safety levers available on both sides of the rifle, and the ejection side being convertible from right-hand to left-hand by rotating the bolt head 180°. The chamber was configured to accept the proprietary belted cartridges designed by Winchester/Olin as well as commercial 12ga rounds, and the barrel could be fitted with a choke or choked barrel extension. The carry handle covers the cocking handle similar to the AR-10, and housed an optical sight which could be converted to a rail sight.

Somewhat a pessimist, she considers everything in the worst way. She often feels like her character has no place at all in Griffin, and believes the purpose of dolls is to fight battles with discouraging conditions. She likes the idea of reserving her actual strength for emergencies, and only when she is in the absolute worst conditions will she actually go all out. Although it is very rare for a situation to deteriorate to such a degree, it is in these harrowing moments that her true abilities can be seen.

Weapon Background[edit]

The HK CAWS (Close Assault Weapon System) was a prototype automatic combat shotgun co-produced by German weapons firm Heckler & Koch and Winchester/Olin during the 1980s. It was Heckler & Koch's entry into the U.S military's Close Assault Weapon System program.[1]

Although beating out designs from AAI Corporation, Pan Associates, and Atchisson, the CAWS program was ultimately canceled, and all production of the HK CAWS has halted.
