The QBZ-95 is the assault rifle variant of a bullpup configured, selective fire weapon system manufactured . Other than the assault rifle, Type 95 also have a carbine and a SAW variant as part of the weapon system. Manufactured by Arsenal 266, part of Norinco and Arsenal 296, under Jianshe Corp. Currently , Type 95 is currently in service with the People's Liberation Army, People's Armed Police (para-military police), and various Chinese law enforcement agencies. The rifle was developed between 1989 till 1995, it is commonly referred just as Type 95 to represent the year of development completion and entering service.
The unexpected strategic stalemate against the Vietnamese forces during the 1979 Sino-Vietnam War prompted refurbishments and upgrades of the People's Liberation Army's arsenal under Premier Deng's rulership, the most significant outcome was the development of the Chinese domestically made rimless intermediate rifle cartridge of 5.8×42mm calibre. Countless prototype weapons were developed to fire this new calibre of munition, in the end the QBZ family of short-stroke piston gas-operated, rotating bolt weapon system emerged and became the standard servicing firearms.
First observed outside China on the 1st of July 1997, when Hong Kong's sovereignty was returned under the CPC's rulership from the United Kingdom. The original Type 95 model is no longer in production as it underwent immediate refurbishment/modernization, upgrades include adjustment to brass ejection port, redesigned muzzle break/buttstock/trigger guard/carrying handle, added compatibility to combat accessories by adding dovetail rails. The current production assault rifle model is known as Type 95-1, other than the assault rifle, Type 95 also have a carbine and a SAW variant.
Operation of the Type 95 is similar to the previous Chinese servicing Kalashnikov derivative Type 81 rifles, but the operating mechanism is set in a bullpup configuration. Chambers the 5.8x42mm DBP10 cartridge, Type 95 is able to achieve a fully automatic cyclic rate of fire of around 650 rounds per minute while using 30-round box or 75-round drum magazine for feeding. Able to cover up to 400 metres of effective firing range with the default iron sights, various Chinese issue optics can also be mounted on the carrying handle to improve effective firing range.
Type 95 is made with primarily industrial grade polymer, rifle variant weights 3.25kg unloaded, rifle variant measure 745mm in length. Also Now featuring fully ambidextrous operation with the fire selector accessible from both sides and a forward ejecting brass ejection port located on the right side, fire selector can enable a 3-round burst on top of the semi and fully automatic firing modes.
Accessories issued to Type 95 operators include rifle grenades with blank ammunition to be fired from the muzzle of the gun, army issue bayonets can also mount on the muzzle end of the barrel. Chinese made QLG91B (Type 91B) 35mm grenade launchers are also issued to various military units, which can fit under Type 95's barrel.
