Weapon Background

A distant relative of the Kalashnikov rifles developed by the Zastava Arms company in 2004, Zastava manufactured Kalash style assault rifles even before the splitting of Yugoslavia, Zastava M21 is a 5.56 calibre rifle developed with the experience of manufacturing Kalash pattern rifles. The M21 is the current standard issue service rifle for the Serbian Army.

The Zastava M21 is a conventional layout, gas operated assault rifle with a rotating bolt locking system. Chambers the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge, M21 is fed by a 30-round magazine, able to achieve a rate of fire of 680 rounds per minute, covering an effective firing range up to 600 metres. On top of the operating mechanism, M21 also have many similar design features of a Kalashnikov rifle, such as the right side charging handle, behind the well magazine catch/release.

Like most other modern modular assault rifle designs, M21 can attach specific combat accessories based on sortie needs, the gun is compatible with items such as bipod and vertical fore grip. A derived model of the Soviet GP-25 underslung 40mm grenade launcher unit was designed for and issued to M21, 22mm calibre rifle grenade can also be launched from the muzzle flash hider. To improve compatibility with NATO issue accessories, M21 can undergo modifications and mount Picatinny rails. M21 also features a foldable stock made of rigid polymer and rifle forearm guard made of heavy-duty synthetic material.

Zastava Arms have experimented with different barrel forging processes, other than the conventional rifling barrel, M21 and variants also have access to barrels with different twist rate or even polygonal rifling patterns, barrels made for M21 are all plated with hard chromium to achieve a longer service lifespan.

Other than the main battle rifle variant, M21 have two shorter variants labelled as M21 S (Shorter barrel assault rifle) and M21 C (Carbine), differ mostly in terms of barrel length, overall weapon size/dimension/weight and firing performance in terms of accuracy/effective range.

The second T-doll nineo contributed to Girls Frontline, The game already have a RF M21Thumb button.pngM21 , so nineo addresses Zastava M21 simply as Zas to avoid confusions. Zas is a very eye catching T-doll with peculiar features: Mushroom head Odd hair style and colour, very visible nail polish of different colours, mismatching stockings and an odd earring piece on her left ear. General colour theme of Zas is black white and cyan added with a bit of orange. The colour combination of cyan and orange does give Zas a little bit of Sci-Fi look.

There is a triangle marking on her orange goggles, same markings can be found above her hips and on her tongue. No possible suggestions towards the meaning of these markings from neither MICA team nor nineo (yet).

Personality

Official character description states that she is a rationalized surrealist, rational actions are essentially her faith, her thoughts are backed up with solid reasons and realistic observations. She does have interesting hobbies that are not quite rational, one of which is finger nail painting, apparently each one of her finger nails all have a different fragrance (She even offers to paint the Commander's nails). Her overall personality characteristic is calm and obedient.

This weibo post from nineo is an unofficial character sheet for Zas, shown several features of Zas' character design and some character personality settings demonstrated through potential quotations. Note that the character setting part are not official descriptions from MICA team, but purely from nineo.

In-game

Zas features a very fast 4 second initial cool down grenade launching skill, which is as fast as the SMG units with Molotov skill while having a larger area of effect. The grenade damage multiplier itself is not high but it has two possible effects depending on how many units she hits with the grenade:

  • More than 3 units hit by the skill, the grenade inflicts a debuff that causes all the enemy units she hit to take increased damage.
  • Less than 3 units hit by the skill, Zas herself will do more damage per shot for a duration.

With the short initial cool down and the large area of effect, Zas' grenade skill is very effective against large crowd of enemy units, for example Dinergate swarms.

  • Zas is the only T-doll to have her mouth covered in her official art, damaged art, costume and damage costume art.
    • As evident from the character sprite animation and further artwork from nineo, she does have a mouth.
  • According to nineo's weibo post, the folder she use to store Zas related work was created on 24th of February, so she set that day as Zas' birthday.
