Weapon Background
The LAR Grizzly Win Mag pistols were a series of handguns conceived, designed, engineered, and developed in the 1980s by their sole inventor, Perry Arnett. Arnett licensed his patent for an interchangeable caliber automatic pistol to L.A.R. Manufacturing Incorporated, where the design would be improved and iterated upon by former owner and founder of L.A.R. Manufacturing Heinz Augat.[2]
The Grizzly is mechanically an modified version of the Colt M1911 handgun, with oversized components designed to handle larger, more powerful cartridges than could be used in the standard-size 1911 pistol. The original prototype built by Perry Arnett achieved this by using two Colt 1911 frames and slides cut and welded to accommodate the .45 Winchester Magnum round, with two steel doubler plates welded to the slide flats to retard the action and increase strength. As a result of being based on a pre-existing design, many parts of the Grizzly are interchangeable with those of standard size pistols from other manufacturers. Some parts, however, are not interchangeable due to the increased front-to-rear depth of the magazine well, including the extractor, the firing pin, and the recoil spring.
The most popular variant of the Grizzly, the Mark I, is chambered for the .45 Winchester Magnum cartridge, hence the "Win Mag" part of the series's name. The most powerful variant, the Mark V (the version featured in GFL), is chambered in .50 Action Express, and was made to compete with the IMI Desert Eagle which used the same cartridge.
Between 1983 and 1999, approximately 15,000 Grizzlys were produced in four versions capable of firing six different cartridges.
Character Design
According to designer's notes for Grizzly in the Art of Girls Frontline artbook, Grizzly's design was inspired by the character of Oumae Kumiko from the anime Hibike Euphonium.
