Weapon Background

The MG 15 is a German machine gun primarily used to cover the rear of German aircraft, developed by Rheinmetall in the early 1930s.

One of the most defining features of the MG 15 is the saddle-drum magazine, which was called that for its symmetrical twin 75-round drum magazine separating around the gun, similar to what MG34 has. The main problem of the saddle-drum magazine is the gunner having to change magazines, giving the enemy fighters a short time to fire without resistance, though gunners are advised to have at least 10 spare magazines for each MG 15 stationed on the aircraft.

At around 1940, the MG 15 was replaced with the belt-fed MG81. However, some MG 15s were modified for infantry use, mainly now having a carrying device for carrying the 3 saddle drums for easier transportation, as many as 17,648 MG 15s were converted to infantry use by 1944 .
