Rintaro Okabe hails from Akihabara, Japan, in the 2010s. He is a freshman at Tokyo Denki University.

A self-proclaimed mad scientist going by the name of "Hououin Kyouma" who is engaged in constant battles with the "Organization" which secretly rules the world and only exists within his delusions. His catchphrase is "El Psy Kongroo". Investigation has revealed that he suffers from "eight-grader syndrome" or "chuunibyou\ hence his roleplaying with the abovementioned backstory and "character details" as well as his penchant for randomly inserting terms from urban legends and Norse mythology into his speech. In terms of both intellectual and physical abilities, Rintaro Okabe is no different from an ordinary human being.

He founded the Future Gadgets Lab with his friends, where his internal designation is LabMem No. 001. Due to an accident, he ended up crossing over to the world of Magrasea.

Rintaro Okabe stands 177cm tall, weighs 59kg, and has an A blood type. Due to poor nutrition, he is scrawnier than most humans of the same age. He speaks in a proud tone and believes that he is "an insane mad scientist whose intellect can influence the destiny of the world, and various governments and organizations have their eye on him".

He typically dresses in a scientist's lab coat, but in order to conform to his character of a mad scientist, said coat has been altered and does not meet professional standards due to having no buttons. From this, we can surmise that Okabe's wild and messy hairstyle is deliberately cultivated to suit this persona. This behavior is also known as "chuunibyou" in human society.

Given our current data, while Okabe is given to uttering statements that might lead to misunderstandings, he is fundamentally an ordinary undergraduate and poses no threat to the Oasis.

Okabe comes from Akihabara, Japan, in the year 2010. However, the world of 2010, as he described it, does not entirely conform to 2010 in our records. After confirming that there was no cognitive discrepancy or recording errors, the Oasis is certain that Okabe and his colleagues come from a completely different world.

In Okabe's original world, he, Mayuri Shiina and Itaru Hashida founded the "Future Gadget Laboratory" on the second floor of the "Ohiyama Building" during which Okabe appointed himself LabMem No. 001. According to Okabe, the Future Gadgets Lab is a scientific organization whose aim is to research and develop various Future Gadgets. However, field data suggests that the lab is more of a science club of sorts.

As for the "Future Gadgets" Okabe claims to have invented, all of them contain homages and inspirations from popular culture, probably because the lab was founded in Akihabara. Their actual functions are strangely dissociated from their original conception. For example, the trigger-operated "Bit Particle Cannon" has the sole function of changing channels and cannot replace a proper remote control. The "Bamboo Helicam\ while capable of aerial photography, is not stabilized and will thus rotate with the bamboo copter's spinning, making it unusable for normal photography.

Due to his severe chuunibyou syndrome, Okabe sometimes performs unusual acts, including but not limited to shouting his alias while striking a pose of dubious meaning, giving the people around him incomprehensible nicknames, worrying out loud about how the "Organization" is planning to kill him, pulling out his cell phone and pretending to have meaningful conversations, and so on.

Despite Okabe's strange behavior, he is surprisingly prudent when a situation arises. Perhaps it is due to his love of conspiracy theories, but he always considers the worst possible outcomes before acting (although said conspiracy theories are either caused by his delusions or overly far-fetched hypotheses). Thanks to his severe chuunibyou syndrome, he also has few friends in real life. Even his colleagues in the Future Gadgets Lab (his LabMems) usually play dumb or ignore his delusions when they come up.

For that reason, despite being the ostensible "leader" of the Future Gadget Laboratory, he commands little to no authority. However, his inclination to cherish his colleagues has earned their respect instead.

When Okabe discovered that he and the Future Gadgets Lab had been transported to an unknown world line—or rather, an unknown world—he and everyone else who had experienced this could not fully accept that fact right away.

Although an endless stream of problems and difficulties soon followed, after coming to understand the situation, Okabe suddenly exploded with a strange passion and sense of purpose. In the space of just one day, he was no longer fazed by crossing over to another world. After settling down in the Oasis, his life did not change much from his previous world; most of his time was spent working on strange Future Gadgets in the lab, each of which would cause various stirs in the Oasis. Unlike in the past, however, several Dolls were influenced by his quirky personality and charm and ended up befriending him.

Even in the Oasis, Okabe continues to give the people around him interesting nicknames. For instance, the "Heavenly Twin Spirals", "Super Hacka ♀", "Tombstone Guide" and so on. In addition, Okabe always refers to the Professor as "Comrade of mine". Although Okabe has not spent that much more time with the Professor compared to the other members of the lab, the two of them are so in sync and understand each other so well that it seems as though they really are comrades who have fought side by side for a long time.

Okabe often brings his new inventions to show off to the Professor or invites the latter to join their Round Table Conferences. Although this usually results in the Professor having to clean up the mess triggered by various Future Gadgets, Okabe, with his self-directed mutterings and self-absorbed attitude (laced with a healthy dose of chuuni delusions) is the only one in all the Oasis who addresses the Professor as an equal. Perhaps the Professor also considers him a trustworthy comrade.
