The AK-74M is a variant of the AK-74 weapons platform designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, with the "M" in the designation standing for "Modernizírovanny" or "Modernized". It was designed to be a more versatile weapon than its predecessors, and features a number of improvements aimed at reducing weight and increasing reliability. It would have been adopted as the primary service rifle of the Soviet Union beginning in the early 1990's, however the Soviet Union collapsed before this could be realized.
