The Welrod is a British bolt action, magazine fed, suppressed pistol devised during World War II at the Inter-Services Research Bureau (later known as Station IX), based near Welwyn Garden City, UK, for use by irregular forces and resistance groups. It was is most well-known for its remarkably silent report that far outclasses conventional suppressorssuppressed firearms. It The Welrod was used primarily by the British SOEfor clandestine operations, but the pistol was also used by American OSS operatives and Resistance forces. Approximately 2,800 units were made.
The Welrod takes the form of a 1.25-inch-diameter (32 mm) cylinder, about 12 inches (300 mm) long. The rear section of the cylinder contains the bolt, which unlike other bolt-action weapons featured no traditional bolt handle. There is a knurled knob at the rear that serves as the bolt handle, which unlocks when rotated 90 degrees. The user has to twist and pull back the bolt by hand in order to eject and chamber cartridges. A bolt action system was chosen for the Welrod as it was deemed to be the quietest action available, since the action doesn't cycle when the gun is fired. The middle section houses the vented barrel and expansion chamber for the barrel. The ported barrel of the Welrod serves two purposes: it releases the powder gases gradually into the rear of the suppressor, reducing the sound of firing, and it reduces the velocity of the bullet to subsonic speeds (especially important in the 9mm version since the standard 9mm loading is supersonic). The metal baffles and rubber wipes that follow the barrel serve to further slow the gases of firing, releasing them over a longer period of time and avoiding the sharp explosion that occurs when high pressure powder gases are suddenly released to the atmosphere. Finally, the front section holds the rubber baffles and wipes of the integral suppressor. The magazine is also the grip and can be removed for easier concealability. The exclusion of a pistol grip was apparently done to help conceal the weapon's purpose and in some groups it was called a "bicycle pump" due to its innocuous look with the magazine/grip removed.
The name 'Welrod' comes from the naming convention used by Station IX for all of their clandestine equipment. The 'Wel' in the name comes from the name of the town in which Station IX was based, that being Welwyn. The 'rod' part of the weapon's name is a description of the weapon's appearance, as without the magazine inserted the gun looked like a small metal tube. Other examples of devices named using this scheme include the 'Welbike', a single seat folding motorbike, and the 'Welman', a small single person submersible. The Welrod was a "sanitized" weapon, meaning that it had no markings indicating its manufacturer or country of origin; all it was marked with was a serial number and some inscrutable symbols and letters. The Birmingham Small Arms Company Limited (BSA) confirmed that they manufactured some Welrod pistols, but that they put no markings at all on them, so it is likely that any markings were added by the British military after delivery.<ref name = "Welrod wiki">[[wikipedia:Welrod|Wikipedia entry on the Welrod]]</ref>

*Despite being a bolt-action weapon, during combat in-game Welrod fires her gun like a conventional semi-automatic pistol, without the bolt-action animation.
*When Welrod is placed to sing in front of the Easter Bunny Microphone furniturepiece, the lyrics that appear are from the song 'Lord Of This World' by the band 'Black Sabbath'.*{{doll name|Welrod MkII|HG|6|costume=costume4}} Digimind upgrade is the first MOD3 to completely change her the unit's buff tile orientation, as opposed to simply adding additional tiles orientationonto the unit's base tile layout.
