Following the Spanish-American War, the US Army sought to replace the Springfield Model 1892-99 Krag–Jørgensen after the Spanish Army inflicted massive casualties on US forces with the German-designed Spanish Mauser Model 1893. After a number of evaluations were completed in Springfield Armory, the Mauser was deemed a superior design and the development of the Springfield Model 1903 began. <ref> [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1903_Springfield#Background/ Wikipedia entry on background] </ref>

Two prototypes were made throughout the development, the US Rifle Model 1900 .30 Prototype had designs incorporating both the Krag–Jørgensen and Spanish Mauser Model 1893 and the US Rifle Model 1901 .30 Prototype which incorporated features from the Mauser Gewehr 98 at a length of 30”. The final design had the rifle shortened down to a length of 24” to create a long gun with the ability to act as a carbine for cavalry troops with the addition of the turn-bolt design. During World War I, the M1903 Springfield saw service with the American Expeditionary Force alongside the M1917 American Enfield due to improperly forged receivers. This caused serious injury to the user and modifications to remedy the problem were made at Serial No. 800,000 at Springfield Armory and Serial No. 285,507 at Rock Island Arsenal resulting in the infamous “Low-Number” M1903 Springfield. Its use as a sniper rifle used the M1913 Warner & Swasey Telescopic Musket Sight by the US Army and the Winchester A5 Telescope by the USMC. <ref> [https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/m1903-m1903a3-rifle-information/ Civilian Marksmanship Program entry on Springfield Low Numbers] </ref>

In World War II, the shortage of the M1 Garand would allow the M1903 Springfield to see frontline service by the US Army and US Marine Corps on both Theatres of war. In 1941, 1942, and 1943 it was used as a standard infantry rifle until it was gradually replaced by the M1 Garand. It was also used as a grenadier’s rifle for use with the M1 Grenade Launcher due to its ability to fire high pressure cartridges. <ref> [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EbQdPcxweI/ TFB video on Grenadier] </ref> The sniper variants of the Springfield rifle would include the M1903A1, M1903A3, and M1903A4. The M1903A3 variant had the original M1905 leaf sight replaced with a rear aperture peep sight, but the M1903A4 variant had the rear aperture peep sight and front sight removed. The US Army and USMC had different variants and scopes for use as a sniper rifle. The Army utilized the A4 using the Weaver Model 330 2.4x, while the USMC retained the A1 and used the Unertl 8x. <ref> [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kO867TRAwQ&t=710s/ Forgotten Weapons on Springfield Sniping Rifles] </ref>

It was officially adopted as a United States military bolt-action rifle on June 19, 1903, and saw service in World War I. It was officially replaced as the standard infantry rifle by the faster-firing semi-automatic 8-round M1 Garand starting in 1937. However, the M1903 Springfield remained in service as a standard issue infantry rifle during World War II, since the U.S. entered the war without sufficient M1 rifles to arm all troops. It also remained in service as a sniper rifle during World War II, the Korean War, and even in the early stages of the Vietnam War. It remains popular as a civilian firearm, historical collector's piece, and as a military drill rifle.<ref name= "wiki">[[wikipedia:M1903_Springfield|Wikipedia entry on Springfield]]</ref>

Weapon Background

Officially designated as the United States Rifle, Caliber .30-06, Model 1903 and referred by the troops as the “03” and “Springfield”, the M1903 Springfield has seen frontline service in nearly twenty wars in a period of 70 years.

The M1903 Springfield would see more frontline service until the 1970s. As of today, it remains a popular rifle amongst civilians, drill teams, hunters, and historical collector’s piece.

Character Design

An Elegant and Gentle aura emits from Springfield as always. Her design follows a color palette of blue, red and white (a nod to the American Flag's Primary Colors).

She has long brown orange hair, with sidelocks done into hair rings and the remainder done into separate twin tails tied with blue, red and white stripped ribbons. She has green eyes and wears a blue blazer, patterned to resemble a Military Academy Cadet's Parade Uniform but worn akin to the Revolutionary War Uniform. An embroidered pattern similar to those found in a US Army Officer "Special Evening Dress" could be seen on both ends of the blazer's sleeves. The Blazer is held in place by a gold chain (tied on the second pair of buttons just above the chest, a white sash slung over the blazer (of which also holds a Turkish Ottoman M1903 Bayonet), a long red ribbon tied at the back and partnered with a long skirt. Underneath, she wears a white long sleeved shirt with a small red ribbon tied around the collar, a pair of white gloves, white trousers and a pair of tall brown laced boots. The Rifle she carries is the M1903A1 "C-Stock" variant.

Café

Her café skin is only exclusively shown only when entering the base café, or in costume/digimind story involvements where Springfield is in the Café.

Unlike her default skin, it departs from the blue-red-white color palette and shows a more casual white and brown palette depicting a typical barista. Her hair is done into a more casual ponytail tied with a big black and white striped ribbon, but still keeping her signature side locks and hair rings. She wears a similar white long sleeved shirt, the red ribbon around the collar is replaced with a blue sailor uniform ribbon,a brown apron with two large pockets is placed on top. While her white trousers are replaced with a pair of blue trousers.

Bar

Exclusive only during the VA-11 HALL-A collaboration event, it features a similar design to the Café skin but some clothes replaced, showing a more bartender look than previously.

Springfield's hair is now affixed in a low ponytail with her signature side locks and hair rings removed, making her hair flow down her back reaching her thighs. Her hair is secured with a chrome-blue ribbon. The white long sleeved shirt is retained but the blue sailor uniform ribbon has been replaced by a chrome blue necktie and the brown apron has been swapped for a black vest. Additionally her trousers are swapped for a blue-black skirt tied with a ribbon in the front.

Classic Witch

Her first player obtainable skin, initially released during the 2016 (2018 EN) Halloween Carnival Limited Time Gacha. She is featured as a "Classical Witch". Worn during said Halloween party in the base.

She maintains her default skin hair style albeit now covered up by a witch's hat. This skin features a slit dress for Springfield exposing her right leg and a portion of her bosom. A black cloak is worn on her back and covers her shoulders. Underneath she wear black stockings paired with brown shoes. A brown double strapped belt is worn around her waist accompanied by a long yellow ribbon. She carries along with her is a picnic basket with a bottle with unknown contents and a black cat sleeping peacefully under her petting hand. In her damage CG it is revealed that the contents of her basket were in fact more candy. Her rifle is slung on her right shoulder while holding a piece of candy, of which she would offer to the commander upon interacting.(see Live2D)

O Holy Night

Springfield's second obtainable skin. Featured as part of the 2016 (2018 EN) Christmas Costumes Special to be purchased from Kalina's Shop. Worn by Springfield during said festivities and following Christmas Parties, and previously took on the role of Secret Santa.

Showcasing a Christmas motif, Springfield wears a Crimson Hood with multiple snowflake pattern along the edges and the hood. Her hair is now arranged into a long braid reaching just past her waist and is rested over her left shoulder, some of her hair that was not left out of the braid has been tied up near the tips is left to rest on her right shoulder. For her top, she wears a white long sleeved sweater complimented by a brown short skirt. Her legs are covered by black-brown stockings, as for her feet she has a pair of tall brown strapped heel boots, while her hands have a pair of brown gloves on. A brown belt can be observed on her hips, and shown on her damaged CG that behind the hood, on her left hip that it's actually a brown satchel. She carries around her rifle and a white sack filled with presents(see story). A notable feature attached to her riffle are a mistletoe and a bell tied with a red ribbon. Regardless if damaged or not she'll always keep her rifle raised and the mistletoe above her head. She carries a M1903 variant with this skin.

Queen in Radiance

Her third obtainable skin, showcases her in a formal dress, it was initially part of the 2017 (2018 EN) Prairial's Allure Limited Time Gacha. Her formal dress was worn during Griffin's Anniversary and Formal Events.

For formal events, Springfield has arranged her hair into a bun while still keeping her signature side locks and hair rings with some white and blue jasmines arranged onto it. Her evening gown, promotes a blue overall motif with only her lower torso featuring a black shade. A Rose is pinned on her dress as an ornament. In her damage art the flowers shown to have their petals shed due to battle damage. She also wears a pair of black gloves and blue heeled shoes. She carries a chrome-plated M1903, modified and used by ceremonial guards or for parades.

Stirring Mermaid

Her fourth obtainable skin, has been showcased in the 2017 "The Young Girls and the Sea" Limited Time Gacha. Worn during their visit to the sea.

Springfield has her hair done in her signature hairstyle albeit this time covered with a white sun hat decorated with blue ribbons. She wears a white long sleeved shirt, with both sleeves rolled up, it's upper buttons unbuttoned and it's lower half rolled up and tied up, exposing her midriff. Her shirt is damped with sweat, making it see-through and a pair of sunglasses is hanged on the open shirt. Below, a thin see-through towel is tied around her waist as cover but failing to conceal her legs from the bright sun. Underneath is a white two piece bikini with blue straps and blue lining on the side. For her feet, a pair of white sandals decorated with white lilies. She carries a white beach umbrella and a blue cooler with her left arm and her rifle is slung onto her right shoulder. By observing her damage art, it appears that she's either carrying a M1903A1 with a "Scant" Stock or a M1903 with the original "S-stock".
