The Snayperskaya Vintovka Chukavina (meaning "Chukavin Sniper Rifle") is a Gas-operated, Short Stroke Gas Piston with a Rotating Bolt firearm, designed by Andrey Yuryevich Chukavin and unveiled in 2016 as a purpose-built Designated Marksman Rifle, with the intent of taking over the role fulfilled by the now-obsolescent Dragunov SVD.
The firearm is designed with a Lower/Upper Receiver assembly, with a polymer lower and steel upper, minimizing overall weight without sacrificing on rigidity. Other improvements over the Dragunov include: A Full Length Picatinny rail, a new Safety Lever more similar to AR-15's, and a Cold Hammer Forged 410mm (16.1 inch) barrel, but there are variants with longer barrels, as well as a .338 Lapua Magnum variant, that possesses a 560mm (22.2 inch) barrel, designated as the SVCh-8.6.
To further cement the idea that it is a modernization of the Dragunov Weapon System, the SVCh feeds from standard Dragunov magazines when used in the 7.62x54mm Rimmed variant, however, there are two more calibers available - The 7.62x51mm NATO, and the .338 Lapua Magnum.
The standard SVCh weighs in at 4.3 kilograms unloaded (9.48 pounds), while the .338 Lapua Magnum variant weighs 6.3 kilograms (13.89 pounds), making it an exceptionally light gun, although the SVD still beats it in this front, weighing the same 4.3 kilos unloaded, but with its standard PSO-1 scope attached.
