Weapon Background

The current standard service rifle for the Armed Forces of Republic of Korea, various political and economical factors at the time made South Korea invest and develop their own servicing firearm instead of using the Colt M16 rifles. K2 was developed between 1972 to 1983 by the South Korean Agency for Defense Development, entered serial production in 1984, fielded in 1986 and made it's first public appearance on the 1987 Armed Forces Day Parade.

K2 is a selective fire rifle that is visually similar to the Armalite AR-18. K2 is chambered for 5.56mm calibre munition such as 5.56x45mm NATO and .223 Remington. Operation of the K2 relies on long-stroke gas piston with rotating bolt, which was derived from the AKM. Fed with STANAG magazines, K2 is able to achieve a rate of fire of 750 rounds per minute. Default iron sights can provide 600 metres of effective firing range. Other than automatic and semi-automatic firing, K2 also features a 3-round burst fire mode.

At the army's request, K2's stock can be folded to the right side, K2 have a 465mm long barrel while the gun itself measures 980mm with the stock unfolded. The stock is made of polymer material, just like the pistol grip and forearm arm guard. When issued with bipods and 4× magnification scopes, K2 can also function as a DMR.

K2 rifle was only modernized in recent years to add combat accessory compatibility with the modernized warfare equipments. With the introduction of PVS-4K rail system, K2A variant can mount Picatinny rail compatible accessories on top of the gun, both side and bottom of the barrel. Grenadier units of the ROK Army also have access to DPI K201 40mm grenade launcher, which was designed and patterned after the American M203.

Other than the K2A, a carbine variant known as K2C is also developed for both domestic law enforcement usage and export purposes.[1]

Character Design

K2 is the third character Anmi contributed to Girls Frontline. A T-Doll of 150cm of body height, K2 has medium-length brunette hair, and her general colouring pattern is black, brown and a tint of orange.

K2's costume "Far East Princess" is likely a reference to a song of the same name from the artist Nauts.[2] This song is featured in the Korean rhythm game DJMax: Respect; notably, K2 was a main character in the collaboration event with DJMax, Glory Day. The costume itself is based on the traditional outfit of Korea, the Hanbok (or Joseon-ot).[3]

Trivia

  • K2 was a Korean server only exclusive T-doll, she was added on the CN and TW servers on a later occasion.
  • K2's skill is a reference to the weapon's 3-round burst feature, and the semi automatic mode typically used for DMR roles.
    • The name itself might be suggesting that the weapon itself overheats, or it is simply K2's love for spicy food.
      • Media reports K2C variant having poorly designed Picatinny rail system attachments that may lead to overheating during extended shooting sessions. But however the K2 rifle featured on the game art is the original K2, not K2C, thus it should not have the said overheating problems. Despite the media claims, both the military and the manufacturer did not make any comment on this subject.[4]
  • Various media reports suggests that Korean military personal are ordered to pick up their spent brass after a live round drill, to reduce the effect of pollution to the environment while recycle the spent brass.[5]
    • This could be what K2's victory animation is referring to, her act of picking up spent brass in a hurry and in panic.
    • This may also be the case with other nation's military forces.
