Weapon BackgroundEdit

K11 is the designation for a multi-weapon in service with the Armed Forces of Republic of Korea. The concept behind its design is very similar to the US XM29 Objective Individual Combat Weapon project, combining a 5.56x45mm caliber rifle and an air-burst explosive launcher into a singular unit. Designed between 2000 to 2008 by various companies and manufactured by S&T Motiv, the rifle itself underwent an overhaul in 2017, with the goal of reducing weight and improving grenade performance.

The weapon consists of two parts: the bottom module is a 5.56mm caliber assault rifle, while the top module is a bullpup-configured 20x30mm caliber grenade launcher capable of chambering both air-burst "smart" grenades and conventional grenades. The grenade launcher module uses the rifle's trigger group to fire, so it is unlikely that it can function as a stand-alone weapon. The rifle, meanwhile, can potentially operate on its own. When fully assembled, the weapon measures 860mm in length and weighs 6.1kg empty.

The rifle section of the K11 effectively functions as the weapon's receiver group, and the action relies on a gas-operated, rotating bolt. The K11 is able to achieve a 700 rounds per minute cyclic rate of fire, and feeds from 5.56mm STANAG pattern magazines of various capacity. The effective range of the rifle is around 300 meters while using a 310mm long barrel. A fire selector is located on left side of the receiver which toggles between 3-round burst, semi automatic, and safe position. The fourth position toggles the weapon to the grenade launching function, which also means the rifle and launcher cannot fire at the same time.

The grenade launcher module is more complex due to the integrated fuse setter for the use of smart grenades. A fairly large module consisting of a laser range finder and ballistic computer is situated on top of the multi-weapon, assisting the operator in determining distance to the target. With the processed data the weapon can set a fuse for the smart grenades to detonate mid-air near the enemies' position. The grenade launcher is fed with a 5-round capacity magazine. Reloading the grenade launcher relies on manual operation of the bolt by the operator.

The K11 achieved satisfying results in both the weapon weight and grenade combat performances. Despite some defects being found with the design, the K11 was adopted for use by the South Korean Armed Forces. This makes the K11 the first air-burst rifle to enter military service, and it took part in the conflicts in Afghanistan. The ROK Army issued two K11's per squadron as supplementary weapons, with the primary grenade launcher remaining the K201 underslung grenade launcher.[1]

Character Design

By observation, K11 measures around 160cm in body height when compared to the rifle. The overcoat she wears (or rather, poorly wears) appears to carry most of her gadgets for combat and her hobbies. Identified items strapped on her coat include: a name tag, several 5.56 STANAG magazines, at least one 20x30mm grenade magazine, some spare 20x30mm grenades (blue coated HEAB rounds), and a electric multimeter.
