Weapon Background
The Type 88, sometimes known as the "Hanyang 88" (Chinese: 漢陽八八式步槍) or the "Hanyang Zao", is a Chinese-made bolt-action rifle. The name of the firearm comes from the Hanyang Arsenal, the primary factory responsible for producing the rifle. It is the most historically iconic rifle in Chinese history, serving through all number of conflicts in the region, from the fall of the Qing Empire to the Korean War.[1]
In an attempt to help reform the weak and corrupted Qing Empire, Viceroy Zhang Zhidong of the southern provinces brought about large scale constitutional changes that advanced the industrial production capability of Hubei Province. These changes allowed for the creation of both the Hubei Ironworks and the Hanyang Arsenal, which helped to significantly increase the manufacturing capability of the province. With the successful establishment of large-scale state-owned enterprises and private factories, the Chinese state now had the industrial capacity to produce its very own bolt-action rifle chambering a rimless cartridge. In lieu of any available domestic rifle designs, it was decided that the Chinese arsenal system would produce a copy of a rifle design from outside of the country.
The Hanyang 88 is, mechanically, a copy of the German Gewehr 88 'Commission Rifle', with a few minor differences. One of the most major design changes was made in 1904, with the removal of the Gewehr 88's barrel shroud. The Hanyang rifle uses a cock-on-open design, and holds 5 rounds of 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge in its Mannlicher-style magazine. The Mannlicher magazine system is loaded with using a 5-round en-bloc clip, with both the cartridges and metal clip inserted into the rifle. When the last round was chambered, the metal clip would fall out of the action via a hole in the magazine floorplate. The main advantage of this kind of loading mechanism was that it allowed the user to reload very quickly, as the rounds did not have to stripped off of a clip into the magazine. The disadvantages, however, were that the hole in the magazine could allow dirt to get in, thus possibly causing reliability issues. This type of magazine system is also present on the Italian Carcano rifles.[2]
The Hanyang Arsenal would begin production of the Type 88 in 1895. Originally designed for use by the armies of the Qing Empire, with the revolution against the Qing dynasty in 1911 and the formation of the Republic of China government in Nanjing, the Hanyang rifle became the standard service rifle of the newly-formed National Revolution Army. The Type 88 would serve as one of the National Revolution Army's primary service arms from 1925 through the end of the Second World War. However, the Hanyang's most extensive service was with the forces of the Chinese United Front against the Imperial Japanese Army during the invasion of China, with the rifle seeing use by both the Nationalist and Communist factions. The rifle serving as the Hanyang's primary contestant during this conflict was the Arisaka Type 38 of the Imperial Japanese Army. When compared to the Type 38, the Hanyang 88 was heavier, produced more recoil, and was more difficult to handle due to the significant differences in manufacturing quality. The Hanyang did, however, possess superior stopping power within its effective range.
In 1935, the Hanyang 88 was set to be replaced as China's standard service rifle by the Type 24 rifle, also known as the 'Chiang Kai-shek' rifle. The Type 24 was based off the shorter and lighter Mauser Standardmodell 1933. The Type 24 became the most widely-used rifle by Chinese forces in the Second Sino-Japanese War. However, manufacture of the new rifle never managed to match demand, and the Type 88 continued to be manufactured to equip the National Revolutionary Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Production of the Hanyang Type 88 would halt in 1944, with a total of 1.1 million rifles being produced.
Eventually, bolt-action rifles were phased out in favor of select-fire weapons following the Korean War, and the Hanyang would be replaced by Chinese copies of the Simonov and Kalashnikov rifles in military service. Remaining Hanyangs went with other bolt-action rifles to militia and Red Guard service.
Character Design
Hanyang Type 88's design is based on ComiAi, a mascot for an anime festival in Wuhan, the city where the Hanyang Arsenal was located. This design inspiration explains her modern-looking maid outfit despite using an ancient and outdated weapon. Being based on ComiAi would also mean that, strictly speaking, Hanyang Type 88 is the first collaboration T-doll in the game.[3][4]
The name of one of Hanyang 88's costumes references 'East Lake', a famous tourist attraction in the Wuchang district of Wuhan. Hubei Province, where Wuhan is located, is known for its production of lotus plants for both the floral decoration and food industry.

Trivia
- As a 'collaboration T-Doll', Hanyang 88 was originally obtainable only via redeemable game-codes, with both collaborating parties giving out game-codes which, when redeemed, granted the player a copy of Hanyang 88. However, she has since been added to the standard construction pool and is primarily obtained from crafting.
- Some of Hanyang's dialogue quotations mentions heat waves. The city of Wuhan is one of the hottest cities in the world, easily able to reach average temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius during the summer months.
- Players who have been to the Wuhan Anime Festival felt like that Hanyang is a version of Ai they could put a ring on and interact more with.
- Her winter costume takes inspiration from Baba Yaga[5][6], an entity from Russian folklore.
- Her victory animation while wearing this costume is a reference to John Wick's legendary feat of killing several enemies in a bar fight using only a pencil.[7]
