Weapon Background

Hanyang made Type 88 is the most historically iconic rifle in China, it accompanied China through all of the conflicts from the fall of Qing Empire to the Korean Peninsula conflict. Production began in 1895, the rifle was modified twice to improve performances and for its different users.

Hanyang is the name of the mega district of Wuhan where Hubei Iron-Works and Hanyang Arsenal were located. In an attempt to reform the weak and corrupted Qing Empire, Viceroy Zhang Zhidong of the southern provinces brought about large scale constitutional changes that advanced the industrial production capability of Hubei province. With the successive establishments of large-scale state-owned enterprises and private factories such as Hanyang Arsenal and Hubei Iron-works, China was able to produce its very own bolt action rifle that chambers a rimeless rifle cartridge.

Designed based on the Mauser Gewehr 88, Hanyang rifle holds 5 rounds of 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge in its Mannlicher style magazine. The magazine can be loaded with a 5-round en-bloc clip. Aiming relies on the iron sights. Front sights comprise of a single blade, while the rear sights can be adjusted up to 2000m. However, the effective firing range of the Hanyang is only 500 metres.

Originally designed for the New Armies of Qing Empire, with the revolution against Qing started in 1911 and the formation of Republic of China government in Nanjing, the Hanyang rifle later became the standard service rifle of National Revolution Army. However, the Hanyang's most extensive service was with the Chinese United Front against the Imperial Japanese Army during the invasion of China, by both the Nationalist and the Communist factions. The Hanyang's primary contestant was the Arisaka type 38 rifle of the Imperial Japanese Army. When compared to the Type 38, the Hanyang 88 was heavier, produced more recoil, and was more difficult to handle due to the significant differences in manufacturing quality. The Hanyang did, however, possess superior stopping power within its effective range.

In 1935, the Hanyang 88 was replaced by the Type 24 or Chiang Kai-shek rifle as standard issue, which was based off the shorter and lighter Mauser Standard Modell 1933. The Type 24 became the most widely-used rifle by Chinese forces in the Second Sino-Japanese War. Nevertheless, the Hanyang rifle remained in service during the Sino-Japanese War. Before that, it saw action in the First Sino-Japanese War, Boxer Rebellion, Xinhai Revolution, and the Central Plains War. It continued to serve both the Nationalist and Communist regimes of China during the Chinese Civil War (before and after the Second Sino-Japanese War) as well as the Korean War with the People's Volunteer Army in limited service. The Hanyang is often referred to as the rifle that forged modern China.

Eventually, bolt action rifles were phased out in favor of automatic weapons as service weapons following the Korean War, and the Hanyang too was replaced by Chinese copies of the Simonov and Kalashnikov rifles in military service. Remaining Hanyangs went with other bolt-action rifles to militia and Red Guard service.

Character Design

Hanyang Type 88 is designed based Wuhan's ComiAi, a mascot for an anime festival of Wuhan city, which explained her maid outfit despite using an ancient and outdated weapon. This would mean, strictly speaking, Hanyang Type 88 is the first collaboration T-doll in the game.

East lake is a famous tourist attraction in Wuchang district of Wuhan, the province of Hubei where Wuhan is situated at is known for its production of lotus plants for both floral and food industry.

Trivia

• As a collaboration T-Doll, Hanyang was originally obtainable only via redeemable game-codes, both collaborating parties gave out game-codes which redeemed a Hanyang Type 88 T-Dolls during the event. But right now, she is added to the construction pool and is primarily obtained from crafting.
• Her quotations also mentions heat waves, Wuhan is one of the hottest city in the world, easily able to reach above 40 degrees Celsius of average temperature during the summer seasons.
• Players who have been to the Wuhan Anime Festival felt like that Hanyang is a version of Ai they could put a ring on and interact more with.
• Her winter costume is inspired from Baba Yaga, a Russian folklore.
  • Coincidentally enough, her victory animation is a reference to John Wick's legendary feat, where he killed his enemy by only using pencil in a bar fight.
