Weapon BackgroundEdit

The M1 is a Hungarian-designed anti-materiel rifle, designed to destroy unarmored and lightly armored targets from long range. The M1 is part of a whole family of high-caliber bullpup anti-materiel rifles, and would be the first rifle of the series to see service.[1]

Development of the 'Gepárd' (Hungarian for 'Cheetah') rifle began in 1987, when the Hungarian Army ordered the creation of a mobile infantry weapon that can effectively damage lightly armored units. These rifles would need to have high accuracy as well as high muzzle velocity, in order to effectively punch through armor from long ranges. Firearms designer Ferenc Földi of the Institute of Military Technology of the Hungarian People's Army completed the task in 1990, and the first model of the Gepárd rifle, dubbed the M1, entered service in the Hungarian Army the following year.

The M1 is designed to fire the 12.7×108mm B32 (and .50 BMG) high-caliber cartridge. This high-power round allows the rifle to reach out to further distances while still maintaining energy on target. It features an extended barrel for long distance accuracy, with the barrel recoiling after every shot similar to an artillery cannon to reduce the recoil generated from firing such a large caliber round. The original M1 model had to be reloaded manually after shot, and the reloading process was rather complicated. The entire grip assembly had to be removed before another cartridge could be inserted, which slowed down the rate of fire significantly. This high-caliber rifle is mounted with a 12x scope by default, capable of covering an effective range of 2000 meters, with a maximum range of 2500 meters.

Many variants was later developed based on the M1, with the M6 being the final evolution of the platform. After the M2 model, all of the subsequent models were either semi-automatic or bolt-action operated.

Trivia

  • Operators of the M1 rifle were told to abandon the weapon if they came under threat, and were instructed to remove the grip assembly of the weapon when they did so, as the Gepárd is not operational without said piece.
