Weapon Background[edit]
The FAMAS (Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne, translated into English as "Assault Rifle from the Saint-Étienne Weapon Factory") is a bullpup configuration, lever-delayed blowback, select fire rifle designed and produced in France by MAS (now merged with GIAT Industries to form Nexter Systems). The rifle was designed in 1971, and would enter into service with the French Army as their standard infantry rifle in 1978. The FAMAS is one of the more well-known military bullpup rifles, as is referred to as 'the Bugle' by French troops. The French military is currently in the process of replacing the FAMAS with a variant of the HK416.[1]
The French military would actually begin experimenting with a bullpup rifle design in the years immediately following the end of World War 2. Development was hampered by a lack of funding, as priority was being given to the modernization of existing weapons. A prototype rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO was developed, but the design was scrapped following the U.S. Army's adoption of the M16 and its smaller 5.56mm cartridge. As a result, MAS would begin producing G3 rifles in order to outfit the French military. Development of a new rifle would not start up again until the late 1960's.
Under the direction of General Paul Tellié, development on what would eventually become the FAMAS started up in 1967. The first prototypes would be completed in 1971, and tested by military evaluators the following year. Despite the rifle performing favorably enough in testing to be considered for adoption, production issues would see the rifle's debut delayed until 1978. As an emergency measure, the French military would use the SIG SG-540 until enough FAMAS rifles could be produced that they could equip the entire French army at once.
The FAMAS 'F1' would enter into French service in the latter part of 1978, and would replace the aging MAS 49/56 rifle and MAT-49 submachine gun. Despite being a decent rifle mechanically, there were a number of issues with the design of the 'F1'. The rifle's polymer furniture was surprisingly fragile, and broke in several key places. Malfunctions related to poor-quality magazines were also common, although those issues went away once MAS began producing more durable magazines. A number of improvements to the rifle would be implemented, and would result in the 'G2' pattern of rifle. The 'G2' was modified to accept NATO pattern magazines, and featured some changes to the trigger guard. In addition, the internal mechanism was tweaked to allow the use of standard brass-cased ammunition as well as the French-made steel-cased ammunition. The French Navy purchased the FAMAS G2 in 1995 and issued it to their Fusiliers Marins and Commandos Marine. However, the French army refused to purchase the G2, preferring to rely on the FAMAS F1 as their primary rifle.[2]
When the Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Etienne factory closed in 2002, no more FAMAS rifles could be produced domestically. The last batch of FAMAS rifles made by Saint-Etienne would see more than a decade of heavy service. To date, the French armed forces currently uses an estimated 400,000 FAMAS F1 and G2 rifles still stored in their arsenal. The military also ceased manufacture of the special steel case ammunition used in the FAMAS. Because the FAMAS did not function properly with NATO standard brass-cased ammunition (chamber fluting can allow the F1 to use brass cases but only G2 rifles can use common STANAG magazines), the French military would begin searching for a replacement. On August 2016, the Ministry of Defense selected Heckler and Koch's HK416 rifle to replace the FAMAS as their new general-issue service rifle.
Character Design
In-game, FAMAS is a blonde-haired T-Doll roughly 150-160cm in height. Unlike most other T-Doll art, FAMAS strikes a combat pose for her default art. Her gun is also quite oversized when compared to her body proportions, something which also happened to RF Kar98k

. FAMAS wears a long red overcoat over her blue dress, black pantyhose, and a pair of white boots. The rifle grenades in her bag appear to also be a little bit oversized. The grenade stored in her bag is a AC58 58mm Anti-Tank Grenade which has been incorrectly modelled like a PG-7V fragmentation grenade. She also seems to prefer the M-9 bayonet over the standard M1956 FAMAS bayonet. The bayonet has a heart-shaped charm dangling off it, with her name inscribed on the heart in fancy lettering.
As evidenced by the trigger guard, grenade sight, and straight 25-round magazine, FAMAS is using the original production FAMAS F1. However, the bayonet is incorrectly positioned underneath the barrel, when it should be mounted above. In her costume 'Guns N' Side Boxes', the bayonet mistake is repeated, and the magazine has also been changed to a STANAG style magazine, despite the F1 model FAMAS not being able to accept STANAG magazines.
In her 'Bird & Forest Whisperer' costume, she uses the newer version of the FAMAS, the G2. It correctly uses the STANAG-type magazines used by the real-life G2. Also, the grenade projectile stored in her backpack is correctly modelled as the APAV40 and AC58 she uses for her special skill. The M-9 bayonet can be seen stuck in the tree. She also wears a black chest rig with a military radio attached on her left side.

Trivia
- Interestingly, FAMAS's chibi animation and AR FNCFNC
's chibi animation in their default costumes are the only ARs, who correctly have their stocks against their shoulders, rather than in the air. - The FAMAS 'FÉLIN' system was introduced as a part of combat enhancement system project. The FÉLIN update reduced the size and height of the carrying handle, and added a rail system. A removable grenade launching sight was added, as well as a front grip used as a controlling mechanism for the SWORD Multi-Sight. A non-FÉLIN version was available for both F and G variant rifles, and was known as the FAMAS Valorise (Enhanced). This variant actually entered service until being replaced by the HK416.
- The F1 Variant has a fatal issue regarding the type of ammunition: when brass-cased 5.56mm is chambered in a FAMAS F1, it will tear off the case rim during ejection. Chamber fluting was the only attempt made to make brass-cased ammunition compatible with the F1.
- The G2 is only the variant of the FAMAS compatible with all types of 5.56mm ammunition.
- There is no way to launch rifle grenades when the bayonet is attached, as the bayonet guard obstructs the compensator.
- The grenade projectile used by FAMAS for her primary skill is the APAV40 F2 multi-role grenade. It is the current variant of the APAV40, where the projectile could be launched with a live round.[3]
- The FAMAS is affectionately known by French-speaking troops as le Clairon ("the Bugle") because of its shape.[1]
