Weapon BackgroundEdit

The F1 Submachine Gun Carbine was the Australian Army's standard issue submachine gun to serve alongside the L1A1 SLR battle rifle from 1962 (Initial Adoption) and April 1963 (First issuing) until the 1990's, until both were replaced by the F88 "Austeyr" bullpup assault rifle.[1]

Following the Korean war, the Royal Australian Ordnance Corps looked to replace the proven and battle-tested Owen Submachine Gun Carbine (Owen Gun) which mainly aimed to improve the standardisation of the weapon system with current issued firearms (such as the L1A1), and to improve upon what was the rushed design of the Owen Gun. A number of designs to replace the Owen were developed, and first came the "Kokoda" SMG, this weapon was lighter than the Owen but suffered from overheating problems and was later developed into the MCEM (Machine Carbine Experimental Model) which during trials had proven to be inferior to the Owen and was scrapped. In light of this, a number of designs from the Australian Design Establishment that received the designation prefix 'X' were developed. The first two iterations of the 'X' weapons were improved upon to result in the X3 Submachine Gun, and after trials, became catalogued as the F1.[2]

The F1 used a standard blowback action with a non-reciprocating charging handle. The charging/cocking handle was positioned on the left side of the receiver with its slot protected from the ingress of dirt by a dust cover. The F1 has a two-position fire selector with up for ‘safe’ and down for ‘fire’. The trigger mechanism allowed for firing single shots by pulling the trigger to the half-way point, this allowed the sear to trip into the semi-automatic position.[3]

The F1 incorporates parts from 3 different weapons to standardise the weapon within the army. It retained the bolt, magazine positioning and solid stock from the preceding Owen. While the bayonet, pistol grip and butt plate come from the then Australian Army standard issue rifle the L1A1, in order to help simplify production. The F1 notably gains the Sterling SMG's perforated barrel jacket and magazine.[4]

The F1 would live in the shadow of its predecessor the Owen. And while still seen as a solid weapon choice with its users, the F1 was simply not preferred over the Owen gun. During its frontline service in the Vietnam War, the F1 was often supplemented or outright replaced by stocks of M16's from the Australians' American allies.

Character Design

F1 is a T-doll of coming in at roughly 155-160 centimetres tall. Her design appears to be inspired by, and revolve around, the typical Digger in the Vietnam War mixed with a more feminine casual outfit.

She wears a green slouch hat, peaked on the left side and featuring a white-creamy coloured Puggaree. Which is traditional Australian military headwear. Although the green is an odd choice as the Slouch hat is typically Khaki, this is probably fused together with the giggle hat that Australian soldiers wore often in place of helmets during the Vietnam war. F1 also carries a jungle green backpack with a canteen attached. [5]

Another feature is her green 'vest' which is in the Jungle green [6] colours of the Vietnam War era Digger, its more casual instead of tactical webbing but more of a fashion choice. Under the vest, F1 wears a white button shirt, which paired with her green vest gives a more park-ranger aesthetic over the predominant digger aesthetic. (Possibly inspired by Steve Irwin, because typical Australian icon as reference)

A specific item of clothing to note is the jungle green non-pleated skirt. While non-pleated skirts are common items of clothing for women in the Australian Army, it is worn under her shirt in a casual fashion.
