Weapon Background

The AK-12, or Automatic Kalashnikov 12, is the latest in the long running Kalashnikov franchise of assault rifles. It is gradually replacing all previous 5.45x39mm firing weapons as the new standard service rifle for the Russian Army, Airborne, and Naval Infantry forces. The GRAU designation for the AK-12 is '7P60'.

Development of the AK-12 started even before 2011, as an attempt at modernizing the previous standard rifle, the AK-74M. The AK-12 project aimed to create a rifle that was lighter in weight, better performing, cheaper to produce, more reliable, and more compatible with modern military equipment. Izhmash (later formed into Kalashnikov Concern) presented their prototype models for rifle trials over a course of several years. In 2016 the AK-12 design was finalized, and it would compete against the Koksharov A-545/762 (AEK-971 derivative) for the standard service rifle title. The Russian Army elected to adopt the AK-12 and its 7.62x39mm-firing variant the AK-15 as their main service rifle in 2018, while the AEK derivatives entered further trials for special forces service.

AK-12 follows the Kalashnikov rifle's basic pattern and design, operating with a gas-operated long-stroke piston system and a rotating bolt. It retains other Kalashnikov features such as the right-side charging handle and the behind-the-well magazine release. The AK-12 is based on the later AK-400 prototype, and therefore has a free-floating barrel (unlike the earlier AK-200 prototype which featured a quick-change barrel), meaning that it is more accurate but the barrel cannot be replaced and the gun cannot be modified to fire other calibers. The final barrel length of the AK-12 is around 415mm. The 3-round hyper burst feature was also replaced by a faster cyclic 2-round burst in the finalized AK-12 model.

Designed to chamber the 5.45x39mm M74 cartridge, the AK-12 is able to reach an effective firing range of 600 meters, with a 700 rounds per minute cyclic rate of fire. Various magazines of different sizes are compatible with the AK-12, ranging from a standard 30-round box, to a 60-round casket mag, and even the RPK-16's 96-round drum magazine. The AK-12 can also be fed with AK-74/RPK-74 5.45x39mm magazines.

The AK-12 features a large number of Picatinny rail placements on the gun to improve compatibility with combat accessories. One long rail is mounted along the top of the receiver, extending all the way to the muzzle end for mounting optics or back up iron sights. Rails are also present on the side and bottom of the rifle's front handguard to mount other combat accessories like foregrips, frontal light attachments, and detachable grenade launchers of the GP-25/GP-34 series. Other features include the side-foldable and adjustable shoulder stock, a newly designed pistol grip to improve ergonomics, and an advanced muzzle brake. Auxiliary items such as suppressors and bayonets can also be fitted on the barrel. The AK-12 also shares many parts with the AK-74 to ease the process of replacement.[1][2]

Character Design

An almost monochrome character in terms of color palette, with long silver hair tightened into a ponytail, AK-12 gives off the impression of a skilled military elite. Her combat attire consists of three layers, listed from inside to outside: a Jacket, an accessory body belt, and a cloak. She also comes with a gas mask of some sort that she occasionally wears. She wears long trousers which seem to almost seamlessly blend into a pair of low-heel/heelless boots. There appears to be a number of ammo pouches attached on her legs.

Her eyes are usually shut, but when opened they are of a bright pink hue. It is worth noting that during her skill's activation, her chibi sprite's eyes will open, and will remain open throughout the skill's duration. When her skill is on cooldown, her eyes close again.

The artist Duoyuanjun (DYJ) commented in one of his Weibo posts on AK-12's design. He proclaimed that the eyelids of the T-Doll do not actually affect ocular function: AK-12 constantly analyzes her surroundings even with her eyelids sealed shut. Her eyelids function as information filters, with unneeded ocular information being ignored in order to save processing power. Upon entering combat her eyes will open, significantly increasing her ability to analyze the battlefield. To counteract the increased processing load from the additional info, AK-12 will turn off her emotion module, relying purely on logical processes when combat intensifies.[3] Though the artist also stated that this was simply their headcanon, and that it should be considered an additional little footnote of Girls' Frontline lore.

Trivia

  • The screen flashes when AK-12 activates her combat skill.
  • In her in-game art, AK-12 is holding the final and full production version of the AK-12, based on the AK-400 series (not to be confused with earlier AK-12 prototypes based on the AK-200 series) with a Valday (Валдай) PK 120 red dot sight attached on the top rail.
    • The official character setting image provided by MICA team states that the AK-12 can be chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO caliber cartridge, but only the early prototype AK-200 derivatives can do this. The final production variant cannot fire nor can be refitted to fire any other caliber other than the 5.45x39mm Soviet.
    • The artist Duoyuanjun himself has commented that the rifle used in-game by AK-12 is the AK-400 variant.[5]
  • The "Faint Light of Furthest Day" costume for AK-12 is an exclusive costume, available only to those who purchased the same jacket from the official shop and redeemed the special code that came with it.
    • This makes AK-12 the fourth T-Doll to receive a merchandise-exclusive costume, the other three being RF SV-98Thumb button.pngSV-98 , SG SPAS-12Thumb button.pngSPAS-12  and SMG UMP45Thumb button.pngUMP45 .
