Weapon Background
The Jericho 941 is a double-action/single-action semi-automatic pistol developed by Israel Military Industries (now called Israel Weapon Industries) that was first released in 1990. The '941' in the handgun's name is a reference to the two calibers the Jericho was originally released in: the 9x19mm Parabellum and the much more powerful .41 Action Express. The Jericho retains the '941' in its name despite the .41 Action Express becoming a discontinued cartridge.
The Jericho's design was based on the venerable CZ-75 handgun designed in the Czech Republic, and shares many of its defining features: an all steel construction, good grip ergonomics, and a low bore axis. The major mechanical differences between the CZ-75 and the Jericho is in their rifling: while the CZ design features traditional rifling, the Jericho uses a polygonal rifling design. The Jericho is also substantially heavier than its Czech counterpart. Aside from this, most differences between the two handguns are aesthetic in nature. Using a well-tested design allowed IMI to avoid the teething problems most new pistol designs experience. The Jericho was built using parts from Italian arms manufacturer Tanfoglio, who had been making their own clones of the CZ-75. By subcontracting much of the basic fabrication work to Tanfoglio, IMI was able to rapidly put into production a pistol capable of meeting Israeli government requirements.
The Jericho 941 is issued in current service throughout the Israeli Security Forces. Israeli Government IMI Jericho 941F's, occasionally available on the US civilian surplus market, are single action only as opposed to being double action/single action like the commercial version. This is due to how the Israeli Security Forces are trained to carry their guns. Traditionally, ISF agents carry their Jerichos with the safety off and with loaded magazines, but without a round in the chamber. Upon drawing their weapon, they will grab and rack the slide of Jericho as they bring the handgun up to look down the sights, cocking the gun and putting a round into the chamber. This type of carry method is known as 'Condition 3', and is sometimes called the 'Israeli Method'.
The Jericho was first imported into the US in 1990 by K.B.I., Inc. of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It was later imported by O.F. Mossberg & Sons under the name 'Uzi Eagle'. Magnum Research, Inc. would import the Jericho as the 'Baby Eagle' (apparently due to a resemblance to the Desert Eagle .50AE handgun) until the end of 2008. From January 2009 until they ceased business in January 2010, K.B.I., Inc. (which also imported Charles Daly firearms) imported the handgun as the Jericho. Magnum Research, now a division of Kahr Arms, announced a renewed importation of the Jericho.
In December 2014, IWI US, Inc. announced they would begin importing both the steel and polymer versions of new production Jericho 941 pistols in early 2015. These new Jericho handguns feature a rail mounted under the barrel for attachments, something not present on the original Jerichos.
