Launched in 2008, in hope to replace the older AR70 in the Italian Army and to gain international contracts, Beretta developed the ARX160 based on the previous product AR70/90, aimed to improve ergonomics and performance while reducing weight and dimensions from it's predecessor. The A2 variant of rifle is slowly becoming the standard servicing arms in several branches of the Italian Armed Forces.

The ARX160 is a gas-operated rotating bolt operated rifle designed to be able to refit to fire different calibre cartridge, ARX160 is able to cover an effective range up to 500 metres, achieving a rate of fire of 700 rounds per minute. Primary cartridge is the 5.56x45mm NATO rounds, but unlike the other modular NATO rifle projects such as HK416/417 that would use the 7.62x51mm NATO, the secondary cartridge of choice for the ARX is the Soviet 7.62x39mm M43. Though note that the modular kit that converts and allows ARX to fire the M43 was introduced in 2012, adaptation of other calibres such as the Soviet 5.45x39mm M74 and the 6.8mm Remington were planned but later on cancelled, two civilian semi automatic only variant that cannot exchange parts with the ARX160 make use of the .223 Remington (ARX100) and .22 Long Rifle cartridges (ARX160 22LR) separately.
The ARX160 is a gas-operated rotating bolt operated rifle designed to be able to fire different calibre cartridge with simple refits. Due to the unusual combination of cartridge calibre, the magazine housing of the ARX accepts the NATO STANAG/C-Mag for the 5.56 NATO feeding and the AK47/AKM/RPK magazine for the 7.62 M43 feeding, a Kalashnikov style "behind the well" mag release can also be fitted to further improve user experience. ARX is made fully ambidextrous, mechanisms such as STANAG style magazine release, charging handle, bolt release and safety switch are all accessible on both sides, even the empty shell ejection port can be changed to either side of the gun. Picatinny rails can be found along the top of the gun, side and bottom of the barrel, able to mount various combat accessories and optics, back-up iron sights are available should the user not have optics. ARX160's project also give birth to a 40mm grenade launcher called GLX160, made specially to fit on the rails under the barrel of ARX160. Buttstock of the ARX160 can be adjusted, A2 variant's buttstock can even be folded.

Weapon Background

The ARX160 is a conventionally laid out light-weight modular assault rifle which was presented to the Italian Armed Forces by Beretta. It was launched in 2008, in the hopes of replacing the older AR70 in the Italian Army and to gain international contracts. Beretta developed the ARX160 based on the previous Italian service rifle, the AR70/90. Beretta aimed to improve the ergonomics and performance of the rifle while reducing the weight and size from its predecessor. The A2 variant of the ARX160 is slowly becoming the standard service rifle in several branches of the Italian Armed Forces.

The ARX160 is a gas-operated rotating bolt operated rifle designed to be able to fire different calibre cartridge with simple refits. The ARX160 is able to operate to an effective range of up to 500 metres, while also being able to achieve a rate of fire of 700 rounds per minute. The rifle's primary cartridge is the 5.56x45mm NATO rounds, but unlike other modular NATO rifle projects, such as the HK416 and HK417 that would use 7.62x51mm NATO, the secondary cartridge of choice for the ARX is the Soviet 7.62x39mm M43. The modular kit that converts and allows ARX to fire the M43 was introduced in 2012, while the adaptation of other calibers, such as the Soviet 5.45x39mm M74 and the 6.8mm Remington, were planned but later on cancelled. Two civilian semi-automatic variants, which cannot exchange parts with the ARX160, make use of the .223 Remington (ARX100) and .22 Long Rifle cartridges (ARX160 22LR) respectively.

Due to the unusual combination of cartridge calibers, the magazine housing of the ARX160 accepts the NATO STANAG/C-Mag for the 5.56 NATO feeding, and the AK47/AKM/RPK magazine for the 7.62 M43 feeding. A Kalashnikov style "behind the well" mag release can also be fitted to further improve user experience. The ARX160 is made fully ambidextrous, with mechanisms such as the STANAG style magazine release, charging handle, bolt release and safety switch all being completely accessible on both sides. Even the empty shell ejection port can be moved to either side of the gun. Picatinny rails can be found along the top of the gun, as well as the side and bottom of the barrel. With the rails, the rifle is capable of mounting various combat accessories and optics, and back-up iron sights should the user not have optics. ARX160's project also gave birth to a 40mm grenade launcher called the GLX160, made specially to fit on the rails under the barrel of ARX160. The buttstock of the ARX160 can be adjusted, while the A2 variant's buttstock can even be folded.

Many other military and law enforcement units in other nations have also adopted the ARX160 into service. The ARX160 was also amongst the candidates in both the US Army carbine competition, and the French army competition, to replace the M4 Carbine and the FAMAS respectively. The rifle saw some live action with NATO forces during their in the war in Afghanistan.[1]

Trivia

  • Similar to the French FAMAS, the bayonet issued to the ARX-160 is also mounted above the barrel.
  • A derivative project of the ARX-160 named the ARX-200 is under development, it will be a battle rifle designed to fire the 7.62x51mm NATO munition.
