The Walther P-38 (Pistole 38) is a 9x19mm Parabellum semi-automatic pistol that was developed by Walther Arms as the service pistol of Nazi Germany's Wehrmacht shortly before World War II. It was intended to replace the costly Luger P08, the production of which was scheduled to end in 1942, though both pistols would serve in the same role.

The P-38 has a locked-breech system with a double-action/single-action trigger mechanism, plus a safety lever that also acted as a hammer decocker. It has a magazine capacity of 8 rounds. The user could chamber a round, use the safety-decocking lever to lower the hammer without the gun firing, and carry the loaded weapon safely. When used in that manner, the user's first shot is a lenghty double-action trigger pull, then subsequent shots in single-action.

Though overshadowed by the more famous Luger, the P-38's design is revolutionary among semi-automatic handguns, with many modern pistols such as the Beretta 92F adopting its DA/SA trigger and decocker mechanisms.

Weapon Background[edit]
